Humans and Modern Society - Series: Post – 4
Natural light has been proven to increase the serotonin levels in our body. Serotonin is one of the most important neurotransmitter which is responsible for feelings of happiness, well-being and state of wakefulness.
The intensity of light perceived by the human eye is measured in terms of ‘Lux’. The special receptors in our eyes captures the natural light and communicates to the brain to put us in a state of wakefulness characterized by being ‘alert and awake’. Here are some indications on the intensity of light:
Bright Sunny Day > 10,000 lux
Cloudy Day > 1,000 lux
Sunrise and Sunset ~ 500 lux
Most indoor lighting – 50 – 100 lux
Brightly lit office – 300 – 500 lux
In order for our brains to receive a robust biological awake signal, we need anywhere > 500 – 1,000 lux. In the absence of this, we neither enter a state of wakefulness nor secrete enough serotonin to keep us happy.
